Moral choices: a guide to Christian ethics
Christians today are confronted with all sorts of ethical questions.
- How we do decide what is right?
- Do we simply rely on the gospel and the Spirit to guide us or do we still need God’s law in the sense of the Ten Commandments?
- Does the Bible speak to contemporary issues and if so, whose interpretation is correct?
These are some of the issues we will grapple with over six nights beginning with the foundational principles of a Lutheran approach to ethics.
Come and join the conversation!
Presenter:
Jeff Silcock Postgraduate Research Coordinator and Head of the Theology Department at ALC
Jeff teaches Christian doctrine, theological ethics, philosophy, and ecumenical theology. He is also active in Luther research. He serves the wider church in several capacities: as the chair of the LCA’s Commission on Theology and Inter-Church Relations, co-chair of the Lutheran–Uniting Church dialogue, and a member of the Lutheran–Orthodox International Joint Commission.
The message of Galatians: a letter for the church today
Come and rediscover the message of Galatians, the book that Luther says changed his ideas about faith and living the Christian life.
In a reading of Paul’s letter, over the three weeks, Dr Stephan Haar will focus on crucial questions about the truth of the Gospel—that we are saved by grace—and what sort of life Christians ought to embrace because or grace: the Spirit’s fruit.
Forty years ago Martin Luther King Jr preached his famous ‘I have a dream’ sermon. The book of Galatians awoke a similar dream for Luther of the new creation in Christ that fuelled a struggle for the Gospel in his generation, and opposition to slavery by John Wesley in his. Dare to dream.
Come along and discover what this letter means for the church today.
Presenter:
Stephen Haar Academic Dean and New Testament lecturer at ALC
Stephen is a pastor with more than 30 years’ experience. He is an experienced teacher and preacher who enjoys helping people to enter the world of the Scriptures, so that the old story takes on new life for them. He encourages people to ask questions and wonder about meaning.
