This unit engages students in a critical reading of the major events, movements and issues experienced by Christianity from its beginning to the present day; it provides an introduction to historical methodology and key analytical tools; it includes discussion of: Church and society relationships in the first three centuries; the formulation of beliefs in the first five centuries; the Church in an age of social and political collapse and transition—the Dark Ages; the Middle Ages; the Reformation; other movements for reform; missionary movements of the modern era; the shaping and shape of twentieth century Christianity.
