Jacob and Joseph—stories of guile and grace, conflict and peace

Come and explore the stories of Jacob and Joseph!

Marvel at the craft of the writer, the multi-layered characters, and the unexpected twists and turns as the stories unfold. Be amazed by the cunning ploys of people like Rebekah, Jacob and Laban as they seek to get the better of others. Was Esau really just a good-natured nincompoop? Does Jacob change for the better as the years pass, and is he finally reconciled with Esau? What are we to make of the wrestling match between Jacob and the mysterious figure at the ford of the Jabbok? How are we to understand stories like those of Shechem and Dinah, and Judah and Tamar? And how does God succeed in fulfilling his promises to his chosen people, in the face of their many faults and foibles?

This may be a bumpy ride, but as always, God’s sustaining grace ensures a happy ending!

Dr Peter Lockwood is an Old Testament lecturer at ALC and the editor of Lutheran Theological Journal. After serving parishes in Melbourne and Albury, he undertook doctoral studies at Luther Seminary in St Paul, Minnesota. Peter is especially interested in the discipline of biblical hermeneutics and the literary and theological analysis of texts.
