ALC Lenten Retreat Day
‘Jesus was tempted and suffered for us.
O come, let us adore him’
This response was part of the closing worship at our ALC Lenten Retreat Day, on Tuesday, 4 March, held at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, Semaphore.
The retreat day was held to enable our community to come apart from the daily routine, and demands of study and college life, in order to spend time in silence, community worship and meditation on Christ’s passion. This day was organised by Dr Zweck and his care group—our thanks to them.
About thirty staff and students attended, participating in different ways and taking up the varied opportunities for spiritual rest and refreshment that were offered. The focus material was the Stations of the Cross, a devotional aid comprised of readings from the passion story, prayers and hymns. This path of devotion is based on the traditional scenes or stations on the way of the cross—the path Jesus took, carrying this cross through Jerusalem, to Golgotha, where he was crucified. Dr Kleinig offered a special guided meditation on the reading for station 7, Luke 23:33–43, in which Jesus is nailed to the cross.
Our day concluded with the celebration of Holy Communion, in which we, the people of the cross, gathered around the altar to receive those amazing gifts Christ gave for us and to us—his body broken, his blood poured out for the forgiveness of sins.
Yes, ‘Jesus was tempted and suffered for us…..O come, let us adore him’.
