News archive: ALC says farewell to pipe organ
A special chapel service was held in the ALC refectory on Tuesday, 28 July 2009, to farewell the ALC pipe organ. Over 60 staff, students and emeriti attended to bid the organ a fond farewell, and to listen to its robust pipes one last time. A number of items were beautifully played by Christian Fandrich.
The decision to give away the organ was made last year, as ALC could not accommodate it any longer in the refectory, and the cost of moving it to another space on campus would be prohibitive; it needed to go to a congregation that would use and enjoy it regularly.
ALC’s offer to gift the pipe organ was accepted by the Free Reformed Church of West Albany, WA. A group of their members commenced dismantling the organ on Thursday, 30 July 2009. Members of the Free Reformed Church have assured ALC that they are delighted at the prospect of having the pipe organ in their church building.
‘We are very excited about the prospect of having a pipe organ in our church building’ Elders Br J Dekker, Chairman, and Br J P Vermeulen said, ’It will assist us in our prayer and praise to our Father in Heaven.’
