Nestingen Lectures
Dr Jim Nestingen is a world-renowned Luther scholar with a gift
for demonstrating the lively relevance of Luther and the confessions for the
contemporary church. He served as a professor of church history at Luther
Seminary, St Paul, Minnesota, from 1980 until his retirement in January last
year. He continues to teach on a part-time basis and supervise post-graduate
students. His passion for the gospel and engaging teaching style are evident in
these lectures which he gave at
Both lectures focus
on justification and the role that both law and gospel play in moving the heart
from repentance to faith. Luther is Nestingen’s main
source of inspiration and it is easy to see why: he knows both the scriptures
and the human heart. And as Nestingen reminds us,
Luther knows the heart because he spent countless hours in the confessional
hearing people confess their sin, then absolving them, and talking with them
about the struggles of the Christian life, their constant battle with sin, and
the victory they have in Christ.
These lectures are
inspirational precisely because, like all good theology, they are down to earth
and show how Luther the pastor applies law and gospel to the conscience as he
ministers to people in preaching and pastoral care. This makes him as relevant
today as he was at the time of the Reformation.
