School of Educational Theology [SET]

School of Educational Theology [SET]

The School of Educational Theology [SET] provides opportunities for you to prepare as a teacher for Lutheran schools or to undertake professional development if you are already teaching in those schools. While the Board for Lutheran Education Australia [BLEA] is responsible for the accreditation of teachers, the courses and programs provided by ALC through the SET help you to become eligible for that accreditation as a teacher, as a Christian Studies teacher and for leadership roles in Lutheran schools.

If you are preparing to become a teacher:

ALC does not offer a full teacher education program. However, if you are studying to become a teacher, or intending to do so, ALC offers you the opportunity to complete the requirements to be eligible for accreditation as a teacher in a Lutheran school while you are studying at another university. This program is called the Lutheran Strand.

The Lutheran Strand consists of three components:

  1. special units of study which can be cross-credited into your education degree: these units deal with the Bible, the Christian faith, teaching the Christian faith and the ethos and nature of Lutheran schools:
  2. specific formation [non-academic] activities in which you will participate:
    • these encourage you to develop a personal commitment to worship, prayer, Bible study and reflection;
    • if you are studying in Adelaide, Brisbane or Ballarat you will be able to attend special formation activities which provide useful information about Lutheran schools and the people who serve in them: this includes an annual retreat day;
  3. final teaching practicum in a Lutheran school:
    • this enables you to experience working in a Lutheran school and also to participate in the worship life of the school and the teaching of Christian Studies.

If you complete the Lutheran Strand you will receive a vocational certificate from ALC which indicates that you are eligible to be accredited as a teacher in a Lutheran school.

If you are not able to be part of the Lutheran Strand, you can still study the ALC units which are included in the strand as the Diploma in Theology (Education). These units are available by coursework or online study modes. Some have also been available by mixed mode [workshops and coursework].

If you are a teacher in a Lutheran school:

ALC offers the following postgraduate courses to help to prepare you for leadership roles in the school and also as a teacher of Christian Studies:

Units in these courses are available to off campus students.
