2017 Fritzsche Oration
18 August 2017
ALC Emeritus Lecturer, Rev Dr Dean Zweck will deliver the address for the 2017 Fritzsche Oration at Australian Lutheran College (ALC) on Friday, 18 August at 7.30pm. His topic for the evening will be, ‘From conflict to reconciliation in the South Land of the Holy Spirit: fruitful dialogue between Lutherans and Catholics in Australia’.
Lutherans and Catholics in Australia have engaged in fruitful ecumenical dialogue for more than forty years, producing eight documents on key theological topics in which there has been serious disagreement since the Reformation of the 16th century. From tentative beginnings as a formal theological dialogue, the relationship soon grew and deepened in mutual respect and true Christian friendship, knit together by prayer and deep study of the Scriptures and the confessional traditions of our two churches. The dialogue team, comprised of theological teachers, pastors, priests and lay persons, has not simply sought theological agreement and consensus at the table but has consistently kept in view the goal of reception by the people of our two churches, both lay and ordained. In recent years the Lutheran–Roman Catholic Dialogue in Australia has been encouraged on its journey by the concept of receptive ecumenism. Ecumenical encounter that truly seeks the unity Christ prayed for his church is a work of the Holy Spirit, who is always bestowing gifts on the whole people of God in Christ Jesus. On our journey to realise the gift of unity, each church can be truly enriched by recognising and receiving particular charisms of partner churches.
All are welcome to attend this event.
The Fritzche Oration commemorates Gotthard Fritzsche as the forerunner of Lutheran theological education in Australia, and highlights the contribution of theologians to the history of Australian Lutheranism. It is an annual event organised in partnership between Australian Lutheran College and the Committee of Lutheran Archives.
