Overseas visitors

In March, ALC was privileged to welcome Dr Werner Klän and his wife Martina to the campus for chapel, coffee and conversation. Dr Klän has recently retired as the systematics professor at the Lutherische Theologische Hochschule in Oberursel, Germany.

Dr Klän first visited Australia at the invitation of the LCA for a three-day hermeneutics conference in 2011 and his presentation is published in the Lutheran Theological Journal (May 2012). LTJ has also published two other papers by him. He is well known to some of the ALC teaching staff and emeriti as a fellow attender and presenter at the International Lutheran Council seminaries conference. In recent years Dr Silcock and Dr Pfeiffer have presented at such conferences and Dr Pietsch attended the conference in Wittenberg in 2016.

As a church historian, Dr Klän also appreciated being able to visit Lutheran Archives while in Adelaide and see the collection of Dr Hermann Sasse’s correspondence first-hand. He is currently editing a volume of essays on Sasse, which will be published next year to mark the 125th anniversary of the birth of Dr Sasse, who was instrumental in bringing together our two former synods to form the LCA. Dr Sasse arrived in Australia from Germany in 1949 and taught here in the area of church history, confessions, and the history of dogma, until he retired in 1969.
